The mission of our music ministries is to serve the Church by leading and uplifting the assembly’s sung worship. The Music Ministry at St. Joseph Parish is vibrant, prayerful and inviting. We believe that the music we sing, as an expression of our faith, is both a gift from and an offering to God. As recipients of God’s grace, we serve with a sense of gratitude for what God has given us.

The music we use at St. Joseph Parish is a mix of traditional and contemporary styles sung by the entire community. All music contains lyrics that are consistent with Catholic teaching.

There are many ways to be involved in music ministry at St. Joseph Parish. We welcome individuals willing to assist in any of the music ministries. Training is provided for Music Ministers in individual and group settings and support is given in periodic formation opportunities.

To become involved in any of the above ministries contact Rosemary Hadland 302-378-5800 or e-mail her at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Cantors/Psalmists
Contemporary Choir
Instrumentalists

Cantors lead the assembly in song throughout the Mass, including the Psalm during the Liturgy of the Word. Cantors are assigned to Masses on a rotating basis, generally serving 2-4 times per month. Rehearsals/coaching are generally held once every other week, but may be more frequent during the seasons of Advent and Lent or for other special occasions. Cantors do not have to belong to one of the choirs. Cantors should be vocally confident and be able to speak clearly and distinctly. The ability to learn music independently is necessary and good vocal skills are required. Cantors should be comfortable standing before the assembly and be able to make poised gestures of invitation. This ministry requires a great deal of competence; the Cantor must be a singer, proclaimer and leader/animator of the assembly’s sung prayer. If you possess a vocal confidence and engaging manner, plus a desire to serve the parish through song, this could be the ministry for you!

Prayer, friendship, and music. The Contemporary Choir is a family of “friends in faith” brought together by our love of music and a desire to lead the parish community in prayerful worship. We are blessed to have talented musicians on vocals, electric and acoustic guitars, bass, flute, drums and percussion to add a contemporary sound to liturgical music. The Contemporary Choir generally rehearses on Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. in St. Joseph Church. Any changes are communicated via email. New players are welcome to join! We are open to musicians of various levels and will provide mentoring experience for playing music during liturgy. Bring your voice or your instrument, and come join us in making music to praise the Lord!

Musicians who are proficient in their instrument are always sought for enhancing our liturgies, especially at Christmas, Easter and other important celebrations. If you would like to serve the parish with your gift of music for special occasions, rather than weekly, please contact us and let us know what you play and when you would be interested in playing.

 Organists and Pianists
 Parish Choir

Organists and pianists support the assembly's singing of hymns and responses, providing strong melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic foundations. Accompanists also work with small groups and instrumentalists. Organists and pianists should be proficient in their respective instruments and have background in service playing and know the Catholic liturgy. St. Joseph Church has a three-manual Allen Renaissance organ and a grand piano. St. Rose of Lima Church has a two-manual Allen Protégé organ. Substitutes are in short supply – especially for weekday funerals. Won’t you consider adding your name to our growing list of musicians?

The Choir is open to all parishioners high school age and over. Rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in St. Joseph Church. The Choir sings at one Mass each weekend; the Mass assignments vary, but are predominantly 9:30 or 11:30 a.m. On occasion, the Choir will sing at 5:00 p.m. Vigil Mass or at St. Rose of Lima Church. The season generally runs from September to June. The Choir also leads sung prayer at various special liturgies such as Christmas Midnight Mass, the Sacred Paschal Triduum, Confirmation and First Holy Communion. No audition is required. Members do not need to know how to read music. All we ask you to bring is a love of singing, a willingness to learn, and a desire to serve the parish through song!
